HAIR TRANSPLANT

Hair loss is a significant problem that often starts at an early age in today’s world. The issue of hair loss, which commonly begins in men in their twenties, can also be seen in some cases in women. Hair loss, which starts with thinning hair and receding hairlines, can develop in men due to genetic factors and in women due to hormonal reasons and certain medical conditions. Individuals with hair loss concerns should first undergo a health screening to determine if there are any underlying health issues causing the hair loss. If health problems such as vitamin and mineral deficiencies or hormonal imbalances that can contribute to hair loss are identified, treatment related to these issues should be applied initially. If the hair loss continues after the necessary treatments or if there are irreversible levels of baldness, a hair transplant procedure can be performed. Nowadays, it is ethically evaluated as appropriate to perform hair transplants on individuals aged 22 and above if there is a need. Therefore, individuals over the age of 22 who are experiencing hair loss can easily undergo a hair transplant.

In recent times, the commonly used methods in hair transplantation are the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) methods.

Hair Transplantation with Safir FUE Method

The Safir FUE method is an innovative application technique in hair transplantation that is widely used today and allows for the transplantation of chest and back hair as well. This technique utilizes micro motors, and since the tips are 0.6 – 0.7 mm in size, there are no visible scars on the back of the head or the donor area where the hair follicles are extracted. Additionally, the patient experiences much less pain after the operation. During the procedure, the area is locally anesthetized, so the patient does not feel any pain. The FUE method consists of several steps. Firstly, the hair is trimmed to a length of 1 mm for better identification of the hair follicles and a clearer view of the transplantation area. The hair in the donor area, which is the region where the hair follicles will be extracted from (such as the chest, back, or back of the head), is also shaved to 1 mm length. Then, the area where the procedure will be performed is prepared by administering local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort. The micro motor tip is inserted into the skin, aligning with the hair follicle, and the follicle along with the surrounding tissue is extracted.

Hair Transplantation with DHI Method

Another hair transplantation technique that has become increasingly popular in recent times is the DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) method. Also known as non-shaving hair transplantation, DHI does not require shaving of the hair. The goal of the DHI method is to focus on areas of sparse hair by avoiding damage to the existing hair, allowing for a denser and more natural hair transplantation process. Besides achieving a natural appearance, the aim is also to enable the patient to return to their daily life as soon as possible. Prior to the transplantation procedure, the transplantation area and the donor area are analyzed using a high-resolution camera and computer software. The analysis aims to determine the hair type, hair density, density of the transplantation area, and the number of grafts that can be obtained. Based on the analysis results, the hair is trimmed, and the design of the transplantation area is created. Then, local anesthesia is applied to the donor area to ensure the patient’s comfort and numbness in the back of the head. Afterwards, the hair follicles are extracted using micro punches and are placed in a solution that enhances their health and prevents damage. After the extraction process from the donor area is completed, local anesthesia is applied to the transplantation area.

The choice of technique among the aforementioned methods is determined by the physician following a consultation and examination based on the patient’s needs and preferences. Since all procedures are performed under local anesthesia, there is no pain or discomfort, and therefore, patients do not need to worry about such concerns. The duration of the hair transplantation operation varies depending on the extent of the area to be transplanted, but on average, the entire process takes around six to seven hours. After the hair transplantation, your physician will inform you about the necessary precautions and recommend a special shampoo to use when you start washing your hair. It is normal to experience crusting, itching, redness, and shedding after the hair transplantation, as these are considered part of the healing process. The healing process varies from person to person, but typically within one to two weeks, the symptoms such as redness, crusting, and itching completely disappear. Once the healing process is complete, the transplanted hair starts to grow immediately. However, it takes approximately six months to a year to achieve the desired natural appearance. This timeframe may vary from person to person.

Does the Hair Transplant Leave Scars?

The process and precautions after a hair transplant are among the most commonly asked questions by those considering or undergoing this treatment. Following the recommendations given by experts and adhering to them is crucial for the success of the hair transplant process. The post-operative period is somewhat lengthy. It is important to pay attention to the post-operative recommendations and understand that the changes observed in oneself are part of a normal and natural process. Since no incisions are made during the hair transplant procedure, there are no visible scars after the healing process.

When Do the Transplanted Hairs Start to Grow After a Hair Transplant?

Patients want the transplanted hairs to grow and emerge quickly after a hair transplant. However, hair transplant is a natural process that requires some patience. After the procedure, occasional hair shedding and growth are normal. Hair growth usually starts within two to three months after the operation. The newly growing hairs can vary in length. If uneven hair growth creates an undesirable appearance, with the approval of the doctor, the hair can be trimmed. However, the trimming should be done in limited amounts, and shaving should be avoided. It is important to take care of the growing hair, washing it gently with the shampoos recommended by the doctor and massaging the scalp.

Do the Transplanted Hairs Fall Out After a Hair Transplant?

A small amount of hair shedding is expected from the tenth day after a hair transplant. Hair shedding and regrowth occur in intervals. In fact, the shed hair consists of previously existing or unhealthy hairs. The shedding of these weak hairs paves the way for the growth and multiplication of healthier hair. Individuals experiencing hair shedding after a hair transplant should be aware that this is a normal process and should not panic. It should be understood that the transplanted hairs and the scalp undergo a certain adaptation process due to the surgical intervention, and hair shedding is an expected outcome. Regular doctor check-ups are important to monitor hair shedding and ensure proper hair care.

Post-Hair Transplant Care

Patients who undergo hair transplants need to take care of their hair follicles for healthy growth after the procedure. Here are some things to pay attention to and avoid after the treatment:

  • Sweating can be harmful to newly transplanted hair follicles. Therefore, heavy physical activities causing sweating should be avoided in the first few days.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and coffee in the initial days. Take care to prevent the transplanted areas from touching the pillow.
  • Avoid hot water and sunlight. Avoid swimming in pools and the sea for the first two weeks.
  • Do not touch the transplanted area with hands and avoid scratching the scalp.
  • Stay away from stress.
  • Do not wet the hair for two days after the procedure.
  • Limit salt consumption.
  • Allow scabs to naturally fall off, and if necessary, gently massage the scalp.
  • To minimize swelling, try to sleep on your back.
  • Take recommended vitamins and minerals to support wound healing.
  • Use prescribed medications and solutions regularly as instructed by the doctor.
  • Be aware that hair shedding is normal for a certain period and avoid panicking.
  • Protect the transplanted area from rain.
  • Choose easy-to-wear and comfortable clothing.
  • Hair cutting can be done after a certain period, but shaving the hair completely is not recommended.
  • Using a headband or a loosely fitting hat can help protect against adverse external factors.
